The biogeochemical cycle of phosphorus is a cyclic movement of P between the Biosphere and the Geosphere.

P is a macronutrient and is essential for the synthesis of DNA, RNA, ATP, and Phospho-lipids.
The phosphorus cycle is an example of the sedimentary biogeochemical cycle. The main reservoir of P is phosphate-bearing rocks usually called 'apatite'.
The phosphate is added to the ecosystem by tectonic movements, weathering of rocks, and anthropogenic activities. It is utilized by living organisms for the synthesis of nucleic acids, ATP, and lipid-protein membranes.
After the death of living organisms, the organic P is converted to inorganic P by the process of 'mineralization'. A certain amount of P is adsorbed by the soil and immobilized into sedimentary rocks of P.

The same cycle is also present in aquatic ecosystems.
