In this instructional video, we’ll walk you through troubleshooting the Dometic forced air furnace installed in our newer vehicles. The 12,000 BTU furnace contains a sealed chamber in which combustion and exhaust occur; the system is vented to the outside. No oxygen in the Four Wheel camper is consumed and no fumes are off-gassed.
There are some cases when the furnace won’t start. Several troubleshooting tips are explained, including checking the propane tanks outside the camper, and using the stove and thermostat to get the furnace and fan running. Another is to check the battery condition with a voltmeter; the furnace won’t start if the battery charge is low.
Removing the vent cover exposes internal components and increases airflow, which can help start up the furnace. Sounds to listen for, indicating the unit is working, are demonstrated during a furnace test. Next, the outside furnace cover and exhaust tube are removed, and the switches and circuit board exposed. Using the reset switch is explained. The furnace is then tested before the sail switch is removed to check for dirt and lint.
Various parts are then reassembled and the unit is tested once again. Lastly, our video ends with an overview of the troubleshooting tips covered.
