Burundi has begun seven days of mourning following the death of its President Pierre Nkurunziza. He died at the age of 55 following an apparent heart attack. Nkurunziza was due to hand over power in August to his handpicked successor, Evariste Ndayishimiye. He was however going to be named as the 'Supreme Guide to Patriotism' with a hefty reward of half a million US dollars and a luxury villa. The former rebel leader has been accused of overseeing the torture, rape, and murder of his opponents by his security forces and a militia allied to the ruling party. He always denied the abuse allegations. So just who was Pierre Nkurunziza?
