In 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail from Spain with three ships: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. After weeks at sea, he and his crew spotted land on October 12th. Believing he had reached Asia, Columbus had actually discovered the New World, landing in the Bahamas.
