Hello! I’m John Russell.
Let’s continue our exploration of common words, expressions, and phrases in American English.
In a recent lesson, we discussed the words “right” and “left.” We also discussed how these words are used with ordinal numbers – numbers that show order in a series.
Today, let’s work together to improve our pronunciation of three useful ordinal numbers for giving directions: first, second, and third.
We will pay careful attention to the consonant sounds.
Let’s start with first. Repeat after me:
-t
-t
-st
-st
-irst
-irst
First
First.
Now it is time for second.
-d
-d
-nd
-nd
-ond
-ond
-cond
-cond
Second
Second
And finally we have third. Repeat after me:
-d
-d
-ird
-ird
Third
Third
Third
There you have it! First, second and third.
Why are these ordinal numbers important?
If you visit America, you might see streets called “First Street,” “Second Street,” and so on.
And of course, someone might give you directions by saying “take the second right,” or “take the third exit on the left.”
That’s all for today! Keep up the good work!
