Non-Native Milkweed Disclaimer: I live in Central Florida and according to the University of Florida IFAS, Tropical Milkweed is documented as “Not a Problem Species” with a recommendation to cut the plants down to the ground by December (in Florida). Since Monarchs in Central and South Florida are not part of the migratory population (they stay here year round), they need a food source for their caterpillars. The only Florida native milkweed that does not die back in late fall/winter is Asclepius perennis (aquatic milkweed). If you have experience with this milkweed, you know that it will not feed a lot of caterpillars. Which is why the use of non-native milkweeds is more common here and even more so in South Florida.
