When was the last time you used your GPS to get to where you needed to go?
Or maybe you are watching this video using your local WIFI?.
But did you know we have a certain Old-Hollywood Starlet to thank?.
Austrian actress Hedy Lamarr was more than just a pretty face.
Yes, her beauty and talent graced the silver screen in some of Hollywood's most beloved films in the 1930's and 1940's.
However, it was truly Hedy's brain that made history!.
During WWII , Hedy and her partner, avant-garde composer, George Antheil joined the war effort by inventing something that would alter the war.
Working side by side, the duo created the “Secret Communications System”.
which was intended to switch radio frequencies amidst the chaos of World War II so that enemies could not decode messages.
This idea served the basis for a communication method called Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS).
FHSS serveed as a building block behind the wireless communication of today’s cell phones, GPS navigators, and Wi-Fi.
Lamarr and Antheil were awarded a patent, but it expired in 1959.
While she continued to accumulate credits in films until 1958, .
Nor Antheil or Lamarr received any credit or made a dime from their invention!.
It wasn’t until Lamarr’s later years that she received any awards for her invention. .
But even til this day, many critics still cannot agree on whether the actress deserved praise for the invention.
