Here’s an easy blues bass line played by a truly great Bass Player To Know, Donald “Duck” Dunn.
The song: Crosscut Saw by Albert King from the record Born Under A Bad Sign
Quick overview: Duck Dunn is well known as the bass player in Booker T. and the MG’s. A member of the house band at Stax in Memphis, he played on classic hits by Sam and Dave, Otis Reading, and Albert King, among many others. He’s also the bass player in The Blues Brothers band! In other words, he’s often who we think of when it comes to Memphis Soul and R&B bass lines.
You can learn more about his history and playing style in my book, Bass Players To Know: Learning From The Greats.
And now for the bass line…
A frequent call at blues jams, this tune is often referred to as a “blues rhumba.”
The notes are very similar to a blues shuffle: the major triad (1, 3, and 5) with the addition of the 6th. Play the same pattern throughout the 12 bar blues, moving the pattern to coincide with the 1, 4, and 5 chords in the blues chord progression.
In true Duck Dunn style, he commits to this specific part, moves it across all of the chords, and serves as the foundation of the band. Before you head to a blues jam, make sure you’ve got this groove down.
