While you may see less bugs in winter, they aren’t all really gone. Many are hiding, waiting for spring to arrive. Check out six ways bugs survive the winter months.
1. Migration
Certain bugs, like monarch butterflies, migrate to warmer climates.
2. Teamwork
Other bugs, like bees, huddle together for warmth. They move their wings to generate heat.
3. Diapause
Diapause is an insect’s form of hibernation. Some bugs, like mosquitoes, are able to pause their growth by going into a dormant state until it warms up.
4. Bugs Sneak Indoors
Some bugs, like stink bugs, Asian lady beetles, and cluster flies, sneak into homes to escape the cold.
5. Anti-Freeze
Certain species, like the snow fly, produce an anti-freeze like liquid in their body.
6. Self-Freeze
While some bugs produce anti-freeze, others, like the woolly bear caterpillar, allow their body to gradually freeze leaving only the interior of their cells thawed.
Keep your home safe from uninvited pests by treating your home with a plant-based insecticide spray.
