It was May 2019, the time of my short trips abroad. For a long time I was dreaming of visiting French Bretagne, in particular the Abbey of Saint-Michel.
I only had three days available and wanted to make the most of it. So the day came and I went to the Southend Airport very early in the morning and flew to Brest.
So, the flight took about an hour and I arrived in Brest early still sleepy. There wasn't much time and I took a stroll all the way down to the fortress and the marine. I wanted to see the city as quickly as I could because I booked a seat in a car that would take me to Rennes. Brest is a modern looking city. It has been a very important military post since the Middle Ages. Its fortress, which is located by the ocean. It is really impressive even nowadays with its massive walls. Even the Germans chose it as their submarine base during World War II. They fortified the port and used the castle as a strategic stronghold and therefore it was subjected to heavy bombing during WWII.
About three hours later I arrived in Rennes. Anyone who has traveled in France knows that there is no city or town without a preserved central medieval part. Wren also offers the beauty of the old architecture, with small bistros and cafes, although it experienced a devastating fire in 1720, but still in the southern part manage to preserve the typical houses with wooden facades. The city walls, which were built in Roman times between the 3rd and 13th centuries, are still preserved.
It was at dusk when I arrived in Dinard, a charming small town lying on the Atlantic rocky shore. The town is a quite famous resort where I booked a room for two nights. I chose it as my base because of its proximity to the airport from where the plane would take me back to London. The other positive point was that Dinard is located next to the famous resort and sea fortress of Saint-Malo from where there is also a regular transport connection to the Saint-Michel Abbey.
At first glance Dinard looked deserted. Many restaurants and hotels were still closed, some of them were already preparing for the new season. However, It was a bit crowded in the town center next to the central beach. People were walking along the large strip of golden sand at low tide.
The next day was the day I was dreaming for. I needed to be in Saint-Malo early in the morning. I took the bus from the bus station to Saint-Michel Abbey.
