The picture exchange communication system (PECS) is an augmentative communication system frequently used with children with autism (Bondy & Frost, 1994; Siegel, 2000; Yamall, 2000)
The PECS teaching protocol is based on B.F. Skinner’s book, Verbal Behavior, and broad spectrum applied behavior analysis( ABA).
Specific prompting and reinforcement strategies that will help the individuals to independent communication are used in the protocol.
The protocol also includes systematic error correction procedures to encourage learning if an error occurs.
Verbal prompts are not used in the protocol that is it is always used physical prompts and fade to independent
