The Star Wars sequel trilogy was just a little bit of a mess. Many of the major plot points of the trilogy are poorly planned out and sometimes completely contradictory. However it seems that Disney might be attempting to fix some of the mistakes made. In this video, I'll explore the pretty cool theory that actually makes Palpatine's plan, and his death, make more sense. And who knows, may this new Star Wars movie rumoured to be set after the Sequel trilogy will confirm some of these ideas.

Now I’m not one of these people that loves to hate on the sequels and views the Disney takeover as the death of the franchise. The Mandalorian and The Final season of the Clone Wars have shown that Disney can make Star Wars. To be honest the final scene of the Clone Wars may be the most emotive and powerful scene in the entirety of Star Wars. And so far, Andor is of a similar high quality. However, the Sequel trilogy did not have this Disney Magic.

In my opinion, one of the major issues with the series was the return of Palpatine. I'm not overly keen on Palpatine returning either in legends or canon. I think it undermines Vader's sacrifice as well as the chosen one prophecy. So if you are going to bring him back it better be good. And there are good ways of bringing back Palpy. Although flawed, the legends Dark Empire series was generally pretty good. It also had the excuse that it came out before the Prequels so the Chosen One prophecy didn’t matter as much. It was also helped by the fact that the story line was original, the ship designs were awesome, and Luke's failure and fall is treated pretty well. Sadly the sequel trilogy didn't treat these themes with the respect they deserve. Famously, Palpatine somehow returned with no explanation. However, I can get over this, as this is certainly not the first time something like this has happened. His plan and eventual death is what really gets me. Now let's forget for a moment that his plan literally makes no sense. I'll save that for another video and I think this is likely unfixable. However, Palpatine's unexplained return and death may actually make sense if we go by this new Theory and some of Disney's recent additions in comics and novels.

During the final showdown between Sheev and Rey Palpatine, he tells her that if she strikes him down he will possess her body, transforming her into empress Rey. However, when she actually does kill him, for some reason this actually kills Palpatine. And what’s more, literally no one is worried that he may just somehow return at some point in the future.

Now this theory has a lot to do with Yoda, force ghosts and Palpatines return from the dead. And its not really that origninal as it is sort of what happens in legends. Just before his final death in legends, Palpatines spirit tries to possess Leias child. However, the dying Jedi knight Brand interceted the spirit. As he died, he dragged Palpatines spirit down into the Netherworld. But here’s the important part that I believe may be being introduced into canon. Every deceased Jedi works together to drag his spirit into the netherworld, preventing him from returning yet again. A similar thing happened to Vitiate, the Sith Emperor of the old Republic. He was ultimately defeated by the combined might of many foe, from both the Sith and the Jedi.

This is what this theory claims happened during that final showdown between Rey and Palpatine. In reality, it wasn’t really Rey defeating Palpatine at all. It was the Ghosts of the dead that we hear that were doing the heavy lifting and preventing Palpatine returning for good.

So what evidence is there for this. Well of course, the line, I am all the Jedi, is a less than subtle clue. But an old Clone Wars episode and a newish Star Wars canon book seem to also back up this theory. After learning of the force Ghost ability at the end of the Clone Wars, Yoda remarks that “Open to us, a path remains, that unknown to the Sith is. Through this path, victory, we may yet find. Not victory in the Clone Wars. But victory for all time." This would suggest that force Ghosts would have a profound impact in Yodas eventual plan to defeat the Sith. In a way, he was stockpiling force ghosts so that when the time came, the Jedi could basically gang up on Palpatine’s spirit and prevent him from returning again.

Another piece of evidence comes from the canon novel Shadows of the Sith, which suggest that Anakin Skywalkers Ghost is trapped on Exegol. Now it isn’t exactly clear why he was trapped there but some have theorised that this was done by Palpatine. The theory proposes that Palpatine knew of Yoda’s plan to get a load of Force Ghosts and therefore began hunting them down. This would plug the major plot hole as to why Anakin does not appear at all in the sequels, even when his own grandson falls to the dark side.
