A man thinks that his mother has been replaced by an imposter; an Iowa postman thinks that he is the commander of the Space Shuttle and an international diplomat; and someone else believes that they are actually dead.... Yes, these all sound bizarre but they are examples of Capgras Syndrome, Confabulation and Cotard's Syndrome, just three rare disorders brought about by brain dysfunction. In this talk, these disorders and others including Split Brain Syndrome, Phantom Limb Syndrome, Visual Neglect and Aphantasia will be described to demonstrate how neuropsychologists study them to get invaluable insights into the healthy functioning brain.
