Robert Schumann actually wanted to compose some small pieces to give it to her daughter Marie as a birthday present. But soon the idea came up to write an album of at the end more than 40 piano pieces. The idea of a "Children's Album" inspired many composers later on like Tchaikovsky, Khachaturian or Shostakovich to write their own album.
