This is a Rolex Submariner 16610 Watch Review
Hey everybody, and welcome to the Rolex review series, presented by Bob's Watches. Today we're here to talk about another popular Rolex sports watch, the reference 16610 Submariner. This is the one everybody thinks of when they hear "Rolex Submariner."
The stainless steel 16610 was produced from 1987 to 2010 and underwent only minor evolutionary changes during its run.
Bezel
The bezel is uni-directional while the insert is made of aluminum and printed black. Divers are more interested in minutes than hours, so the insert features tick marks at each minute between 12 o'clock and three, then every five minutes for the rest of the circumference. Numerals indicate 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50-minute marks.
Case
The 16610 case is machined from 904L stainless steel, which gives it the strength to withstand water pressure at depths up to 300 meters. The crown and back are both screw-down, which helps the 16610 achieve its depth rating.
The case of the 16610 had drilled lugs until about 2003. These holes made it easier for folks to change bracelets and straps. After 2003 however, the holes were eliminated for a cleaner look.
The crystal is sapphire with a cyclops date magnifier giving the watch its signature Rolex look.
Bracelet
The bracelets on earlier watches have hollow end links while watches produced after 2001 or so will have solid end links. Solid end links serve to eliminate stretch in the bracelet near the lugs.
Dial
The dial is the Submariner's typically understated black dial with 18K white gold hour markers and four lines of text below center. There's a date window at 3 o'clock, and the hands are the Mercedes hands found on all Rolex sports models.
Lume
The 16610 started life with Tritium lume and switched to Luminova in the 1990s. Tritium has a half-life of about fifteen years, so older 16610s will no longer glow in the dark – unless they've been serviced and have had a service dial installed. The hour markers and hands of Luminova-equipped watches will glow green.
Movement / Technical Info
The 16610 is driven by Rolex's robust 3135 chronometer movement. The 3135 has proven itself to be an extremely high quality and durable movement for decades. The 3135s in the newest 16610s are equipped with a Parachrom hairspring for improved durability and a large measure of resistance to temperature changes and magnetism.
Conclusions
The 16610 Submariner is the one that pops into our minds when we hear the name of this legendary dive watch. Its classic lines, understated black dial and bezel, date function, and 300-meter depth rating make it a perfect choice for those who want one watch to do everything. It looks – and performs – just as great at a dinner party as it does diving a reef.
