Sublimation printing, also known as All Over Dye Sublimation, is a variant of transfer printing, but it uses specialist ink, specialist transfer paper and is mainly used for white polyester t-shirts. It makes all over t-shirt printing a possibility.
It gives a super sharp colour finish and the main difference is that, when being applied, the ink reaches a temperature at which the ink turns into a gas before adhering to the garments. This way there is no loss of colour in the application process.
A large sheet of transfer paper is printed out and placed on top of the garment. This then goes under a special heat press. The sublimation name is applied because the dye in the design transitions between solid and gas states without going through a liquid stage.
We can only print on polyester fabrics currently, because the temperatures needed to achieve a high quality print would burn a cotton garment.
The fabric’s knit construction also affects the result, especially for circular knit fabrics, unless they have a fine gauge knit and are made specifically for sublimation printing. For this reason, it’s essential that we supply the garments for you. We have a minimum of 6 units per design for all over dye sublimation.
We can achieve 95% coverage of a garment using sublimation printing, meaning you can have your designs totally covering a t-shirt, achieving maximum impact.
