Violence and harassment in the world of work has deep impacts on women and girls with physical, psychological and economic consequences. While the informal sector lacks social and legal protections to address GBV in most countries, fear of violence and harassment also prevents women from leaving their homes or using public transportation to get to and from work. The event discussion delved into how to integrate gender-based violence as a key issue for economic justice and rights and served as an opportunity to build sustained commitment for member states to ratify the ILO Convention (No.190) and take specific actions to address violence and harassment at work.
The ILO Convention (No.190), adopted in 2019, presents a key opportunity in the global policy landscape, through which all workers, and women in particular, in all their diversities can be protected from gender-based violence in the world of work. It outlines clear obligations from Member States which require specific actions from employers by law. The relevance of this discussion is heightened in the context of COVID-19 which has reshaped where work happens and it also offers an opportunity to deepen strategic connections across two Action Coalition Themes for the Generation Equality Forum.
