The guest speakers for this event are Hollie Thompson, the Student Recruitment & Outreach Officer at the University of Gloucestershire, Tiegan Yates, the Student Recruitment Assistant at Edge hill University and Dr Chris Field, a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Ecology at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Session 1: An introduction to studying biology and bioscience courses
Hollie talks about what biology and bioscience is at university level and examples of courses on offer such as genetics, plant science and biochemistry.
There are over 1000 Biology courses on offer, explains Hollie, so it is vital you do your research before choosing which one is right for you. Lots of topic areas are covered when you study Biology and Hollie goes through some of these topics. For example, you will have the opportunity to learn in detail animal and human biology, study differences between the two and explore sub-topics. Hollie speaks about the benefits of studying biology at university and the different types of biology degrees. She goes through modules you will study, some which will be compulsory and some which are optional to allow you to specialise in your area of interest. Before deciding which university is right for you it is important to consider a range of factors which Hollie goes through. Finally, she touches on the transferable skills you gain from studying biology and career options available after you graduate.
Session 2: Biology and biosciences
Tiegan speaks why you should study biology and bioscience at university. Not only does it allow you to enhance employability skills, but you will also gain an in-depth understanding of a wide range of disciplines. Tiegan shares some application tips for when you apply and how to show your motivation for the course as well as demonstrating specific skills.
She speaks about the disciplines in biology and highlights why it is important to do your research before choosing the right course as there are over 1000 biology courses on UCAS. In terms of assessment, this will vary for each university and consists of a range of methods such as presentations and scientific articles, explains Tiegan. Finally, she speaks about the skills you will develop during your undergraduate degree and opportunities open to biology graduates.
Session 3: What to expect on a biological sciences degree
Chris talks about the teaching staff you will be taught by on a biology degree – specialists in their field. You will be taught using a variety of teaching methods such as advanced equipment and will work in labs with real-world scenarios, explains Chris. He goes on to speak about each year of a biological science degree and the modules you will study as well as touching on contact hours with tutors, teaching styles and assessments.
You will also have the opportunity to complete practical work, explains Chris, through field and overseas trips. Finally, he talks about the different career destinations for biological sciences graduates.
