This year, intensity of monsoon rains remained much higher as compared to previous years. South Punjab received a lot of rain spells during monsoon of this year which has caused severe damage to cotton crop. In this brief video, some suggestions have been delivered to recover such crop of cotton.
Cotton is an important crop of Pakistan and it has been playing very vital role in our economy. In 1991, Pakistan was the 2nd largest cotton producer after USA. During the 1st and 2nd decade of 20th century, virus, pest problems, change in sowing times of BT varieties, lack of durable varieties, lack of interest of Sugar mafia in cotton, middle-man based marketing system and climatic factors gradually lead this crop to utter destruction up till 2020. This year, most of cotton growers are not willing to cultivate this crop due to the previous damages of this crop for several consecutive years.
Cotton crop of Sindh, Bluchistan and some parts of South Punjab was badly hit by torrential rains during previous monsoon season of July and August. Even then, a huge acreage of cotton crop of central and south Punjab escaped severe damage. Many of our courageous farmers have revived
by bearing heavy expenses on the fertilizer, insecticides and in some cases fungicides. Almost 50- 60% of cotton crop of Punjab province has been revived and farmers are fetching so high rates that they have never seen before this. Seed cotton rates have increased from 10-12 thousand per
maund and many farmers have achieved plus 30 maunds per acre.
Major portion of cotton crop has been spoiled due recent monsoon rains and hardly 1/3 to 1/4th part of total crop has survived this year. Some of the farmers have managed to survive by adopting multiple series of inputs and operations. In this video, we have suggested the additional use/repeated spray of potassium nitrate in the form of K leaf (Jaffer Agro) or Speedfol K 10:10:40 (Swat Agro). After complete boll setting, it may be repeated after an interval of 15 days. Fertigation of soluble potash @ 10 kg/acre may also serve the purpose.
