The largest-ever D-flawless diamond to be put up for auction has sold for 33.5 million US dollars at Christie's in Geneva.
The white, matchbox-sized "Creation One" diamond from Swiss jeweller de Grisogono weighs a whopping 163 carats and is mounted in a diamond and emerald necklace.
It was cut from a giant rough stone mined in Angola last year and was the standout lot at a "Magnificent Jewels" auction on Tuesday 14th November 2017.
The Australian diamond company Lucapa, which mined the stone originally measuring more than seven centimetres (2.7 inches) in length, says it was the largest ever diamond discovered in Angola.
Also on the block Tuesday was Le Mazarin, a pink diamond that had belonged to a string of French kings and rulers.
It sold for a fee of 14,375,000 dollars, including the premium, and obliterated a pre-sale estimate in the single-digit millions.
