STORYLINE:
China’s foreign ministry said Friday that China never asked enterprises to illegally collect data and urged the U.S. to stop cracking down on Chinese companies.
Foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning called on the U.S. to respect market economy and stop suppressing Chinese companies.
Governments are worried TikTok’s owner ByteDance might give browsing history or other data about users to China’s government or promote propaganda and disinformation.
Mao said the U.S. has provided no evidence of illegal data collection.
The Wall Street Journal reported U.S. authorities were considering banning TikTok ban if ByteDance doesn’t sell the company.
U.S. lawmakers Thursday pressed TikTok’s CEO over data security and harmful content, responding skeptically during a tense committee hearing to his assurances that the hugely popular video-sharing app prioritizes user safety and should not be banned due to its Chinese connections.
The nearly six-hour grilling of Chew by lawmakers brought the platform’s 150 million U.S. users no closer to an answer as to whether the app will be wiped from their devices.
Mao said the U.S. has provided no evidence of national security threats by TikTok.
