Post anal fistula operation, the recovery time depends on what is the type of fistula and what is the type of surgery we have done. If it is a simple low-lying fistula, which entails laying down or opening the tract, the recovery will be within probably 4 to 5 weeks. Patients however is discharged on the same day or the next day and needs to put in a pad around the anus for a couple of days and after that he can return to work. However the wound will take about 4 weeks to completely heal. This is when the surgery is a straightforward simple fistula surgery. However when the recovery for the complex fistulas is much more prolonged because it may entail staged procedures. So the recovery may last for few weeks to months and infact, some patients take maybe a years to completely heal.
