“How do I know if my teen is manipulating me?”

I get asked almost daily, and my answer comes down to three things:

1) Are you afraid of losing control?
2) Are you being present to your teenager’s emotions through empathy and validation?
3) Do you understand your teen can only manipulate you if you let them because you lack effective boundaries?

When teenagers feel unheard, or have an unmet need for long enough, they learn to manipulate to have those met. It doesn’t mean your teenager is bad.

Without you teaching them, healthy relationship tools, like self advocacy and respect, and effective communication, they use unhealthy tools like manipulation.

In this video, I’ll explain how to be more emotionally present to your teenagers emotions and have very firm boundaries to avoid feeling manipulated, while keeping your relationship with your teen, healthy and connected.
