On this channel I show you ancient creatures that lived on our planet many years ago on a prehistoric planet. For fans of paleontology and history. Today I will tell you about.....
Elasmotherium is one of the most impressive representatives of the megafauna that inhabited the expanses of Europe in the Middle Pleistocene. Rhinoceroses themselves are not small animals, but Elasmotherium stood out even against their background. The length of the body without the horn is 5 meters, at the withers more than 250 cm. And the horn itself was 150 to 200 cm long. The five-ton monster, comparable in size to a large Indian elephant, was an inhabitant of the tundra-steppe, a wide strip stretching from Europe to China.
Elasmotherium preferred to feed near bodies of water. The food of elasmotherians was probably coastal shrubs and grasses.
Elasmotherium was known to Paleolithic hunters as a game animal. Its rock carvings are found both in Spain and in the Urals. From Taman there is a known find of an Elasmotherium skull with a lodged fragment of a stone spearhead.
The extinction of Elasmotherium in Europe dates back to the beginning of the Valdai glaciation 120,000 years ago.
