The main two reasons are to get a nice even stand for uniform germination and two inch planting depth also helps your corn achieve uniform emergence. 2 inch planting depth gives you more consistent soil temperature and soil moisture, which leads to uniform emergence and germination. Another reason is a shallower planting depth is more susceptible to temperature fluctuations, making cold spells much more harmful to your corn.
