NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR- Dr. Carmel Casey's plans to become a doctor were in motion from the age of five. A native of Gander, Newfoundland, Carmel achieved her goal when she received her medical degree from Memorial University in 1988.
Along with eight colleagues, Carmel enjoys a busy family practice at the Gander Medical Clinic. Their hospital practice comprises internal medicine, palliative care, and caring for residents of a local nursing home.
Carmel is a dedicated teacher and volunteer in her community. She is devoted to the "Active Schools Initiative" which focuses on active living and healthy nutrition for children, and grew out of her position as representative for Newfoundland and Labrador on the CFPC's Doctors Promoting Active Living program. By 2007, all primary/elementary schools in the region will have joined the program to become "active schools".
Carmel also has a special interest in programs that benefit adults with intellectual disabilities, and is founder and chair of the Victorian Order of Nurses 'Broadening Horizons Program', for which she received the VON's Gold Team of Excellence Award in 2005. Carmel is very involved with the Special Olympics and treasures the time she spends with the athletes. She is on the Board of Directors of Special Olympics Newfoundland & Labrador and helped coach the provincial track team for the 2006 National Special Olympics Summer Games. In her personal time, Carmel enjoys taking piano lessons and heading to the gym.
"I love family medicine since it allows me to attend births, to alleviate suffering at the time of death, and to help any way I can in between." "Family physicians possess a sacred trust which allows us to share in some of the greatest joys and the deepest sorrows of human existence -- we are truly blessed in this regard."
