Today we are sailing from our anchorage outside of Jolly Harbour over to English Harbour on the southern end of Antigua. We explore a bit of historic Nelson's Dockyard and settle in to our beautiful protected anchorage, staging for an amazing day of exploring the island tomorrow.
Here's a brief history of English Harbour I found on google:
After the British colonized Antigua in 1632, the British Navy began using English Harbour as a safe haven. The harbour's position on the south side of Antigua island facilitated the monitoring of neighbouring islands, and the harbour was naturally well-suited to protect ships and cargo from hurricanes. Nelson's Dockyard is the only continuously working Georgian Era dockyard in the world. It was built in the early 18th century and abandoned by the British Navy in 1889. The dockyard is named after Admiral Horatio Nelson, who lived in the Royal Navy Dockyard from 1784 through 1787.
