자유한국당 대선 후보 선출
Weeks away now from a presidential election, the conservative Liberty Korea Party... has chosen its nominee.
But the fallout from the Park administration's downfall is making for a complicated political landscape.
Ji Myung-kil tells us about the new candidate.
Hong Joon-pyo,... a tough-talking prosecutor-turned-politician and the current governor of Gyeongsangnam-do province,... was chosen as the Liberty Korea Party's presidential nominee.
At the party's national convention on Friday,... Hong bested his three rivals -- former six-term lawmaker Rhee In-je, Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Kim Kwan-yong and second-term lawmaker Kim Jin-tae.
"The nomination was determined by a vote among the party members at the convention and a public opinion poll taken earlier, with each part weighted 50 percent."
In accepting the nomination, the outspoken Hong, who is a longtime member of the non-Park Geun-hye faction, vowed to open up a new era for conservatism in the wake of the corruption scandal surrounding the ousted former president.
Hong's chances of winning will depend largely on what he does next.
In a poll on the potential nominees from each party, released by Gallup Korea on Friday, Hong came in fifth, with a favorability rating of 4 percent, trailing liberal front-runner Moon Jae-in, who had 31 percent support.
But pundits predict that Hong could try to forge an alliance with the splinter conservative Bareun Party or the centrist People's Party... to take on the Democratic Party of Korea.
That could pave the way for a centrist candidate like Ahn Cheol-soo of the People's Party.
The main opposition Democratic Party will hold its final in-house primary next Monday to pick its standard-bearer, with Moon Jae-in widely expected to prevail.
