Travel Vlog #79 - 2021 | North Iceland
We are headed NORTH in Iceland along the Ring Road, and trying to find all of the best things to see! Van life Iceland continues in Myvatn, which is a town, but also a lake. Many volcanoes have previously erupted in this area, leading to some unique geothermal features. Hverir, Leirhnjukur, and Dimmuborgir Lava Fields are a few of the areas you can visit, and of course we visited them all! This area reminded us of Yellowstone quite a bit, which isn't surprising considering it's also a volcano! We stopped at Grjótagjá cave briefly, you really only need a couple minutes here, and I think it would be cooler if you were a Game of Thrones fan, but a cool stop nonetheless!
After basking in sulfur, we headed towards one of the coolest geological features we've seen yet - the Skutustadir Pseudo Craters! While these don't look incredibly exciting from the outside, it's what's on the inside that counts ;) these are craters that look like previously active volcanoes, but have no lava or magma conduits underneath, hence the name pseudo craters! What's even cooler is that these don't exist ANYWHERE else on Earth. Just on Mars!! Wild!!
We FINALLY are stepping foot into a hot spring! After driving by many opportunities to indulge in Iceland's most famous past-time, we're finally joining in. We headed even further north to Husavik - yes, from the Euro Vision movie. More importantly thought, they're the whale watching capital of Iceland! Husavik also has a (relatively new) hot bath here called Geosea Geothermal Sea Baths, which overlook the sea. We loved the contrast of sitting in naturally heated water while looking out over the freezing waters. This costs $45/person and doesn't include any extras like the Blue Lagoon. Our last stop of the day before heading to Akureyri was Godafoss - another breathtaking waterfall! Iceland has no shortage of waterfalls, but this should be our last big waterfall of the trip :(
Make sure to subscribe, we're heading to a capsule hotel next week in Akureyri!
We're currently on a trip around the Ring Road, all while living the van life in Iceland! Travel in 2021 is tricky and confusing, but we're here to help, ask us any questions you have!
