"Son qual rocca percossa dall' onde"
Ann Hallenberg (Tolomeo)
with Il Complesso Barocco under Alan Curtis
from Handel's opera Tolomeo, re d'Egitto (HWV 25)
First performed April 30, 1728 in London at the King's Theatre, Haymarket with Francesco Bernardi, called "Senesino" (alto-castrato) as Tolomeo and Francesca Cuzzoni (soprano) as Seleuce.
Libretto by Nicola Francesco Haym:
Son qual rocca percossa dall' onde,
che le frange, le spezza, e non teme
di lor furia il temuto rigor.
Solo un fulmin la rompe e confonde,
e spezzata tra l'onde la preme,
resta oppressa, ma senza dolor.
TRANSLATION:
I am like a rock battered by the waves,
that breaks and shatters them, and does not fear
the fearsome cruelty of their rage.
Only a thunderbolt smashes and crushes it,
and pushes it, broken, under the waves,
it is overwhelmed, but not cast down.
