Arena Stage marked a year of transition by dominating the Helen Hayes Award nominations, as the Avett Brothers musical “Swept Away” and director Janos Szasz’s avant-garde revival of “Angels in America Part One: Millennium Approaches” led all shows with 12 nods apiece in Monday night’s announcement. The Southwest Waterfront arts center, which in 2023 celebrated the end of Molly Smith’s quarter-century at the helm and the introduction of artistic director Hana S. Sharif, bested all companies with 32 nominations for the annual awards honoring the best in D. C. area theater. Arlington’s Signature Theatre came in second with 20, including 11 for Matthew Gardiner’s boldly intimate staging of the turn-of-the-century musical epic “Ragtime.”
