I’ve been skating for most of my life, but I never had the confidence to land a kickflip. Not once. I developed a mental block early on that was rooted in fear. Sometimes it’s easy to go an entire lifetime convincing yourself that something isn’t possible – that you aren’t capable of achieving it.
Last month I committed to practicing daily, on a course to overcome that part of my brain, and after a month of severely bruised shins and sore ankles, I’m proud to finally say “I know how to kickflip” :)
Achievements in skateboarding are a beautiful metaphor for achievements in life. It’s not easy. It doesn’t come without effort. And in order to get there you have to BELIEVE it will happen, you have to ACT in accordance with it happening, you have to COMMIT to repeating the action in practice, you will learn that some days are harder than others, and you will FAIL many times before you first succeed, and through any discouragement and disbelief, you have to VISUALIZE yourself achieving it. It starts in the mind.
