Sczerina Perot is a public interest lawyer who uses advocacy, litigation, and coalition building to change systems that trap people in homelessness and poverty. Prior to her move to London, Ms. Perot was a lawyer, an activist, and an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law School in Washington DC. She has received recognition for her dedication to social change from Georgetown University Law School, the National Association of Public interest Law (now Equal Justice Works), the Bar Association of the District of Columbia, which named her Young Lawyer of the Year in 2000, and the National Student Partnership (now LIFT) in 2007. Since moving to London in 2009 she has done volunteer work with the Citizens Advice Bureau and the Next Door Project of Zaccheus 2000 on housing, homelessness, and public benefits. Most recently she worked on a campaign to draw attention to families who were homeless and forced to live in substandard housing by Westminster City Council. Due to the negative attention this illegal practice received, Westminster recently ended the practice of housing children and their parents in bed and breakfasts, and has moved over 170 homeless families into housing that complies with the law.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
