Over the past couple of years, I’ve mentioned the savings app Long Game a couple of times, most recently including it on my list of apps to try out in 2020. While this tool was previously meant to help you set money aside in savings, they recently expanded their offerings to include a debit card. So how does this spending account work and what makes it unique? Let’s take a look at what you should know about it.
The first thing to know about the Long Game debit card is that you can apply for it through the app, although you’ll need to confirm some additional details
Opting into Long Game’s spending account is relatively easy and can be done through the app itself. But first you will need to confirm some personal information including your social security number. Additionally, you’ll need to answer a series of questions — almost like a mini quiz — to confirm your identity. After these few steps, you should get confirmation that your debit card is on its way. In my case, it arrived within just a few business days. Once it does, you can activate it through the app as well.
Next, one of my favorite features of the debit card is the RoundUps feature that helps you automatically set aside savings
Although the Long Game debit cards offers features you’d expect like the ability to use it wherever Visa is accepted, it also includes some more interesting features. My favorite of these is the RoundUps option that can help you build up your savings when ever you use the card to make a purchase. This RoundUps feature will take the spare change from your transactions and set it aside. So if you buy a cup of coffee for $2.65, Long Game would deduct $3 from your spending account and drop 35¢ into savings and reward you with bonus coins. By the way, you toggle this option on or off in Settings.
While this overall feature may not be the most original thing as Acorns has been using something similar for several years, this seems like a good application of the idea that could truly benefit people looking to start saving.
In addition to earning coins via roundups, Long Game also rewards you with bonus coins, free plays, and more when you use the card
Another aspect of the Long Game debit card that fans of the app are sure to love is that you can unlock additional coin bonuses and free game plays by using your card. For example, after making a purhase, I unlocked a chest containing coins and a free Omega Millions play. Looking at my home screen now, it seems that using my card two more times will earn me another such chest. Apparently you can also score extra coins by setting up direct deposit for your account. Thus, if you enjoy the app’s variety of minigames and the chance to win more cash, then there are plenty of fun reasons to give the debit card a try.
Finally, another perk of using the debit card is that you can instantly transfer funds from your Long Game savings into spending, allowing you much easier access
One of the minor issues with Long Game that I noted in my initial review is that it does take a few days to transfer funds from the app back to your main bank account if needed. This is one problem that the new debit card actually solves to some degree, as you can instantly move money from your savings to spending, and then use your debit card to access money either by ATM or point of sale. However, on that note, one downside is that Long Game makes no mention of free ATM use, you can expect to have to pay fees when pulling money out this way. Still, in a pinch, it’s nice to have this expedited option for reaching your money.
With all things considered, if you’re a fan of Long Game and could use some help setting money aside, I do definitely see benefits to this card. However in terms of general banking products, you may be able to do better.
Overall, I do appreciate that Long Game tried to make their debit card do more than just be able to spend money. For example, I could see the RoundUps feature proving helpful to those still trying to get into the habit of saving, although I could unfortunately also imagine some users overspending in a bid to earn coins.
In any case, as interesting as Long Game’s spend account is, I might not recommend making it your main bank account. Instead, I personally prefer something like SoFi Money. But, as an auxiliary account, Long Game could easily inject some fun into reaching your savings goals.
