Today, we get up close and personal with a Rolex Date, reference 1503.
When this landed at T&H HQ, I freaked out. To me, it’s just the perfect watch, certainly the perfect yellow gold Rolex – within relative affordability, that is.
It’s a Rolex Date, reference 1503. It was manufactured in 1973 and cased in 14K yellow gold. It features an absolutely mesmerizing brown mosaic dial, which, if rare dials are your thing, will make you quite giddy. One second it’s soft, under the radar, and then as soon as it meets the sun, boom! It explodes.
And look at that gold case – it’s extremely sharp. But even more delightfully, its original finishing remains – look at those lugs, brushed at their top and reflective at the side. Just as Rolex intended.
On the wrist, it’s so much beefier than 34’s from Omega or Patek. The oyster case, acrylic crystal, cyclops, and thick lugs just add such body to a size that is, otherwise, more old school and unapproachable for most.
I chose to put it on a beautiful navy suede strap, which I think looks terrific – but I can imagine the possibilities – black alligator, burgundy calf, camouflage, this watch would pull them all of with ease. I mean, you’d never be bored again.
