Hammer toe, also called as deformed toe is very common in people with arthritis problems and it is also common with people who had a trauma. A very rare condition called as the Hallus Valgus, where there is a deformity of the foot by birth. That can also lead to this condition called as hammer toe. It very commonly happens in the second toes. All the toes in your foot should be straight and if one of the toes gets bent. So when you walk, the tip of the toe touches the ground. The tip of the toe should not hit the ground , that is called as hammering. So that is called as hammer toe. Other conditions like neurological conditions can lead to hammer toe. So once we know what hammer toe is, we treat it according to the causes. By and large the hammer toe, treatment is a surgical treatment where we correct the deformity. Sometimes a bony surgery will be required. Sometimes a soft tissue surgery will be required to correct the toe straight. At times when you do this, you may loose the movement of the toes but it will become painless. Because the unnatural part of the body is hitting the ground, it becomes very painful in hammer toe. So those toes when we make it a little bit straight, it will be a little both stiff, but your pain will be less. You will have more presentable foot cosmetically and you will have a more functional foot.
