The Valens Aqueduct is part of the water supply system of Constantinople. The aqueduct was built during the reign of Emperor Valens around 368-375 and was a very important stage in the development of the water supply system of Constantinople - it connected the two hills of the city. Its original length was more than 1000 meters. Nowadays, the surviving part of the aqueduct is 971 meters long. Through lead pipes laid along the top of the aqueduct, water flowed into the city until the mid-19th century. Currently, the aqueduct is a tourist attraction in Istanbul, with the city’s busy highway, Ataturk Boulevard, running underneath it.
