In this video, Dr. Kristin Britton from Northstar VETS will show you how to give oral liquid medications to a reptile. Giving medications can be a daunting task, but with the right technique and tools, it can be done safely and effectively. Here are the steps:
Prepare the medication: Make sure you have the appropriate medication for your reptile and that it's in liquid form. If the medication needs to be refrigerated, let it come to room temperature before administering.
Choose the right syringe: You'll need a syringe that's small enough to fit into your reptile's mouth, but large enough to hold the medication. A 1ml or 3ml syringe should work for most reptiles.
Position your reptile: Gently pick up your reptile and hold them securely. Depending on the size of your reptile, you may need a second person to assist.
Offer the syringe: Slowly introduce the syringe to your reptile's mouth. Aim the syringe towards the back of the mouth, near the throat. Be careful not to push the syringe too far back, as this can cause your reptile to aspirate.
Administer the medication: Gently press the plunger of the syringe to release the medication into your reptile's mouth. You may need to do this several times to administer the entire dose.
Monitor your reptile: After giving the medication, make sure to monitor your reptile for any adverse reactions or side effects.
Remember, giving oral liquid medications should only be done under the guidance of a veterinarian. If you have any questions or concerns about giving medication to your reptile, contact your veterinarian for advice.
