Legendary East German spy master Markus Wolf, 73, whose agents once infiltrated the topmost levels of the West German administration, went on trial in Dusseldorf on kidnapping and assault charges going back more than 30 years.
Wolf is accused of the 1955 kidnapping of a secretary who worked for the
Americans and whom the East Germans wanted to win over to their side. Wolf is also accused of the unlawful imprisonment in 1959 of an East German, Georg Angerer, whom the East German secret services wanted to use to discredit the then-mayor of West Berlin and future federal chancellor, Willy Brandt.
