**DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT OWN THIS VIDEO. I just think it's a pretty great.**
There is no confidence that equals sheer ignorance. It's an idea i've had that's been stirred awake from studying one of the masters of storytelling, Orson Welles. The idea that it's only when you're familiar with a profession that you begin to be careful to the point that you're scared to do something new, for fear of what other people who also are familiar with the subject will say or think about you. There is a profound level of freedom that comes from ignorance. I'm not talking about the bad, incompetent type of ignorance. But rather the boundless imagination that comes from an ignorance immune to the idea of failing or impossibility. I'm sure most of you have heard of the idea that comfort breeds complacency. Well, that goes hand in hand with the idea that ignorance brings freedom. The subject of this interview I posted is referring to a film Orson Welles made at the age of 25. His first film to be precise. A film that has been unanimously voted on most film-related publications as the greatest film of all time. That film is named Citizen Kane. It wasn't a film made by an industry veteran- it was a film written and directed by a man who knew so little about the craft of filmmaking that his DP had to give him a crash course on camera techniques. A man with so little experience that he created new techniques that had never been attempted before simply because he didn't know they couldn't be done. Protect and cherish the ignorance that comes from not knowing every little detail about a profession or craft. I think the majority of people make the mistake of believing they need to know as much as possible about a thing before they can possible create something for themselves. They think that the more they know, the more they'll be capable of. Well, I believe the opposite. The less you know, the more you don't know what you're not capable of. All you need is the willingness to try, the flexibility to adapt, and the ignorance to believe anything is possible. Break the mold. Be ignorant.
The Freedom of Ignorance- Orson Welles
