I used to glaze these inkwells in one, held with a pair of tongs on the outside, dipped entirely to allow the glaze to bubble inside, then I’d pour it out. The only issue with that method was that it took too long for the glaze to bubble inside sufficiently enough through the narrow opening, often resulting in layers of glaze too thick both inside and out. Nowadays I do it like this. It takes a day or so longer but that’s no problem. I place my thumb into the opening and carefully push it underneath the glaze until the red iron oxide based feldspathic crackle glaze hits my thumb. It’s held there for a brief moment before being pulled out.

The glaze on the outside dries overnight and then, the following morning, I’ll pour a slightly thinner mixture of the glaze inside, swirl it around, and then let it pour out. There’s usually some cleaning up that needs to be done thereafter but by doing this the layers of glaze around the vessel tend to be far more consistent in terms of thickness and generally it’s all a bit tidier too.
