Openwork revolving vases where the inner cylinder ingeniously rotates within an outer porcelain body, were an invention of the 1740s at the Chinese imperial kilns. They were created specially to satisfy the demanding taste of the Qianlong emperor (ruled 1736–95). Later emperors created their own versions and copies, like this one, were also produced in the 1900s.
