(10 Jan 2017) Mourners from all walks of life in Iran - from the country's president to passers-by on the street - paid their respects on January 9th 2017 to the late Iranian leader Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani following his death over the weekend at the age of 82.
Hundreds of people and officials attended a farewell ceremony to pay tribute to him, hosted by Rafsanjani's family at the house of the Islamic Republic founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, whom Rafsanjani regarded as a role model and served as a close aide to for years.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi attended the ceremony, among others.

Hundreds of thousands of people on January 10th attended a funeral procession for Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the former Iranian president who died of a heart problem.
The body was driven through Enghelab (Revolution) street in central Tehran and was to be buried at the site where founder of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's grave is located.
A number of supporters of Mir Hossein Mousavi, the opposition leader currently under house arrest, used the opportunity to chant slogans asking for the house arrest to end.
Rafsanjani was considered a father of the moderate camp and was highly respected by reformists.
Hardliners in turn also chanted slogans in support of the ruling system.
