"To me, from a certain moment - especially from the moment they started trying to cancel our culture in the world, including Tchaikovsky and Pushkin - it makes no difference how big are the stars that come. I'm interested in people who come because they are interested in meeting us, showing their movies, seeing other movies. And I think that generally this is the basis for a real film festival."

The 44th International Moscow Film Festival opened on Friday (26 AUGUST 2022) amid the special operation in Ukraine with most potential western participants boycotting the event.
Despite the controversy surrounding the festival, the organizers say it attracted three times as many guests as the previous gathering with 230 films from 65 countries being shown.
Asked about what kind of a hero is viable in modern cinema, the MIFF president Nikita Mikhalkov replied that "these days, the heroes are in Donbas", adding that "a new world and a new society are being born there."
