STORYLINE:
Russia continued to send tanks and troops to the breakaway Georgian province of South Ossetia on Saturday, and processions of military hardware could be seen on roads leading to the border.
The conflict between Georgia and Russia has escalated significantly since Friday, when Georgia launched a major offensive in South Ossetia to regain control of the breakaway province.
Russia, which has close ties to the province and posts peacekeepers there, responded by sending in armed convoys and military combat aircraft, and on Saturday bombed Georgian towns, in a major escalation of the conflict that has left scores of civilians dead and wounded.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters in Moscow that some 1,500 people have been killed, but that figure could not be independently confirmed.
Both claim the battle started after the other side violated a cease-fire that had been declared just hours earlier after a week of sporadic clashes.
Russian military commanders said 15 peacekeepers have been killed and about 150 others were wounded in South Ossetia.
They have accused Georgian troops of killing and wounding Russian peacekeepers when they seized Russian checkpoints.
The allegations could not be independently confirmed.
The latest violence is the worst outbreak of hostilities since South Ossetia won de facto independence in a war against Georgia that ended in 1992.
