Should you be concerned if Social Security schedules a
consultative examination for you to attend?
As I discuss in this video, consultative evaluations are like
“independent medical examinations” used by insurance companies.
SSA uses the reports from these evaluations to better understand
your medical condition and the functional limitations that arise from
your medical problems.
You may be asked to attend a physical medicine consultative evaluation,
a psychological evaluation, or both.
In my experience, SSA sends most claimants to these examinations
so you should not draw any positive or negative conclusions when you
receive a notice that you have been scheduled.
Generally speaking, the "psychological consultatives" will be neutral or
helpful to your case, while the physical medicine "consultatives" rarely
provide any benefit.
You should not rely on a consultative evaluation to win your case - they exist
so that SSA can fulfill its obligation to develop a medical record for an indigent
claimant.
Treatment records from long time treating physicians and functional capacity
evaluations from your treating doctors serve as much stronger and convincing evidence.
The consultative evaluation process used by Social Security is but one of the
many confusing and time consuming elements of a disability claim.
