Satellite images captured, Thursday, August 22, the fires and charred earth of the Amazon rainforest, as wildfires rage on near the border area with Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay.
The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite and Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellites operated by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration took the images that show the damage left behind from wildfires moving across South America.
Wildfires raging in the Amazon have hit a record number this year, with 72,843 fires detected so far by Brazil's space research center INPE, as concerns grow over right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro's environmental policy. (Reuters)
