Juan Alvarez is a Ph.D. student at Horn Point Laboratory who is working to understand the ecological drivers of bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico, where he grew up. These coastal lagoons are predominantly dominated by a dinoflagellate called Pyrodinium bahamense and the glow they emit makes the bays a lucrative tourist destination for the island.
