Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ is the fastest luxury class vehicle on the Nordschleife (North Loop) of the Nürburgring.
In August, Porsche announced the facelifted Panamera Turbo was the fastest “executive car” as it lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:29.81.
That record has now fallen as the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ is the “fastest luxury class vehicle on the Nordschleife.”
The car was “completely standard", according to Mercedes, but clearly it was well equipped for the task as it has a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine that pumps out 630 hp (470 kW / 639 PS) and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque. Backed up by a nine-speed gearbox and a performance-oriented all-wheel drive system, the car can accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.2 seconds before hitting a top speed 196 mph (315 km/h).
The conditions on the extremely demanding course in the Eifel were anything but optimal, as some sections of the course even had wet spots. At outside temperatures of seven and asphalt temperatures of ten degrees Celsius, development engineer Demien Schaffert, made optimum use of the full potential of the top model in the AMG GT four-door vehicle family. In the RACE driving programme, the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension specifically tightens the damper characteristics, and the steering characteristic curve becomes more direct. In the “Master” position, the AMG DYNAMICS agility programme also utilises all the possibilities of the fully variable all-wheel drive system – as well as the rapid-response control of the electronic limited-slip differential – to ensure the highest possible dynamic response. As an additional safety measure for the driver, the vehicle was equipped with a bucket seat and four-point seat belts.
Shortly after this record was set in the Mercedes AMG GT 63 S (quite a mouthful) AMG launched another attempt at a lap record, this time with the Mercedes AMG GT Black Series. Despite the rapidly fading light the most powerful model in the AMG range shattered the previous lap record which was set by Lamborghini two years ago . More about this in Part II of our videos on Mercedes AMG's record setting exploits at the Nürburgring on 4 November, 2020.
Both videos show the full lap records, from start to finish, and the view from inside of each car is nail biting, particularly when the track had still not dried out and darkness was approaching.
These are hyper-performance dream cars - not true supercars, hypercars or megacars, but simply the fastest of what are now the top end of the sports car range. After all, just over 700 hp nowadays for the AMG Black Series in nothing compared with the multi-thousand horse power of some Bugatti models.
Nevertheless, DreamCar News is very pleased to bring you these videos through its mydreamcarnews youtube channel.
Keep dreaming - Enjoy . . .
