Our skin is home to millions of bacteria, fungi and viruses. These microorganisms are collectively known as skin microbiota. These organisms are broadly classified into commensals and pathogens.
In particular, Cutibacterium acnes (formerly known as Propionibacterium acnes) is one of the two main inhabitants (the other major inhabitant is Staphylococcus epidermidis) of the skin.
In order to maintain good skin health and avoid pathogenesis of the acne bacteria, a good skincare regime must be in place. In more serious cases, in-clinic treatments are also available to combat acne-causing bacteria and reduce skin inflammation.
